Description and symbolism:

The anchor with a cut rope over waves recalls the martyrdom of St. Philomena, a patroness of the Armiger. Emperor Diocletian had ordered the drowning of the Saint using an anchor, but two angels cut the rope, saving her. The anchor is also a loose canting of the Armiger’s given names, both connected with the sea.

The book is an attribute of St. Dymphna, a patroness of the Armiger. The ends of the cross bottony resemble a shamrock, indicating the Irish origin of the Saint; the red alludes to her martyrdom.

The fleurs de lis are symbols of purity, representative of both patron saints of the Armiger. They are also symbols of the Blessed Virgin Mary; together with the blue field, they allude to the Armiger’s membership in the Legion of Mary.

The motto is an expression of the Armiger’s devotion to Mary.
