Description and symbolism:
The boat with fire and palm leaf is inspired by the martyrdom of the Augustinian Martyrs of Gafsa. These Christian martyrs, under the persecution of the Vandal King Hunneric in the 5th century, were condemned to be burned alive. Yet, in a miraculous turn, the flames refused to consume them—the pyre would not ignite. This divine defiance became a powerful testament to their faith. Eventually, the executioners resorted to beating them to death.
The waves are a symbol of the spiritual journey, inspired by the biblical account of St. Peter walking on the water toward Jesus. In that story, Peter stepped out in faith, trusting the Savior’s invitation. But when he noticed the storm and the crashing waves around him, fear overtook his faith, and he began to sink. In desperation, he cried out to Jesus, who immediately reached out and saved him.
The scallop represents the Armiger’s patron saint, St. John the Baptist, a symbol of baptism and forerunner of Christ.
The Mariam Auspice monogram reflects the Armiger’s devotion to Our Lady of Guidance, a title that emphasizes Mary’s role as one who leads and nurtures on the journey of faith.
On the border, the black color traditionally symbolizes humility, wisdom, constancy, and sometimes mourning or penance. The crosses within the black border add further religious significance. Crosses are universal symbols of Christian faith, sacrifice, and dedication to a spiritual path.
The motto alludes to the Armiger’s devotion to follow the voice of God, even when it is hard to hear, or even if it takes the Armiger through fire.
