The late Toribio B. Sulam was the son of Doroteo Sulam and Valentina Bantiling. The family traces back to the municipalities of Nabas, Aklan, and Balasan, Iloilo. In 1857, Don Juan Silverio granted permission to Francisco Ariola and 50 other families to settle in the eastern part of Panay Island. The Sulam family was among these 50 families who journeyed southeastward and established themselves in Punta Bulukawe, Capiz (present day Punta Badaiang, Carles).

Description and symbolism:

The ladder supported by two lions is canting to the family name, Sulam, meaning “ladder” in Hebrew. The image recalls the Biblical account of Jacob in Genesis 28:12-15, where Jacob sees a ladder extending between heaven and earth, with angels ascending and descending upon it; God assures Jacob that his descendants will be numerous and blessed. This symbolism reflects the family’s faith, spiritual connection and trust in divine guidance.

The sugar cane and rice stalks allude to the family’s primary livelihood being rooted in agriculture, as the Sulam’s ancestors were hardworking farmers who cultivated these crops. It further recalls the family’s journey of migration and resilience, and enduring connection to the lands where they settled.

The golden net and blue waves reflect the family’s residence in Estancia, a municipality known for its rich fishing grounds and abundant seafood. The sea and waves play a vital role in the daily lives of many family members, shaping both their livelihood and heritage. Many members of the Sulam family have pursued careers in the maritime industry, such as maritime engineers and seafarers.
